Early-morning highway car accident in Bay Area kills driver

A deadly early-morning Bay Area car accident remained very mysterious for the California Highway Patrol, one day after it happened. How did two vehicles in Santa Clara County collide with such force as to “basically” tear one of them in half, as one trooper put it?

The San Jose Mercury News reports that the car accident took place around 4 a.m. on Jan. 5, on a highway in an unincorporated area of Santa Clara County. One of the vehicles was driven by a 21-year-old man, and had three passengers, including a San Francisco woman. The other vehicle was driven by a 46-year-old man.
